Vinexpo boss: World wine consumption set to rise

22 June, 2009

World wine consumption is set to rise 6% to 2.8bn cases in 2012 according to IWSR. The research was cited by Vinexpo chief executive Robert Beynat in his keynote speech, which marked the opening of the show.

Beynat drew attention to growth in China and Russia, where sales are forecast to rise in the run-up to 2012, sharing 25% and 36% respectively by then. In addition, the US market is forecast to consume 3.8bn bottles in 2012 and is set fair to become the world’s largest wine-consuming country. Figures distributed by Ubifrance, an independent industry research company, support this outlook.

Figures for French wine and spirits exports measured in both volume and value indicate a small upturn in the first four months of the year, January to April, 2009. Markets in Asia were notably strong and a small upturn was observable in the USA, Beynat noted.
