Special Lagavulin to raise money for Islay charities
Published:  19 January, 2017

Lagavulin distillery’s year-long 200th anniversary celebrations conclude with the sale of 520 bottles of a special limited edition 1991 expression, which will be sold via a special ballot.

A further bottle will be kept for the Diageo archive and bottle ‘No.1’ will go to auction.

The sale of the single cask bottling of the Islay single malt scotch whisky (52.7% abv), will see all proceeds, expected to exceed £500,000, divided between seven charities on Islay. Auctioning ‘No 1’ will raise further funds for the island’s charities.

Cask 6148 was selected from three by Diageo CEO Ivan Menezes and a special team including Lagavulin distillery manager Georgette Crawford and Diageo’s head of whisky outreach Nick Morgan, who masterminded the whole project.

Crawford, said: “We will all be raising a dram to years gone by and an exciting future ahead of us and this incredible island, as we close a year of spectacular celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the distillery.

“The range and ambition of the projects we are supporting is something that as an ‘Ileach’. I feel very deeply about and I am so proud to see the proceeds of our iconic whisky benefit the local community in such an unforgettable way.”

Morgan said: “Being able to launch a bottling like this that will have a deep impact on the magical island of Islay for generations to come is a career highlight. This is just one way in which we want to express our affection for the people who have welcomed us to work and live on Islay for the last 200 years.”

The 520 bottles can only be purchased only via the ballot on The Whisky Exchange website: thewhiskyexchange.com/feature/lagavulinlimitededition.

The ballot takes place on February 12.
