Scotland: Whisky producers launch Edinburgh gin

The makers of Sheep Dip whisky have launched a gin.

Edinburgh Gin is the newest product from Spencerfield Spirits Co and they describe it as a “small batch, big juniper gin with a particularly Scottish twist”. The gin is distilled outside of Scotland, using Scottish grain spirit and classic gin botanicals such as juniper, coriander, citrus peel, angelica and orris root. It is then shipped to Scotland for the addition of Scottish botanicals including Scottish juniper, heather and milk thistle.

It is bottled in Edinburgh at 43% ABV.

Alex Nicol of Spencerfield Spirit Co said: “When gin became the fashionable spirit in the nineteenth century, Edinburgh distillers, like their London counterparts, produced a gin which was a direct copy of Dutch genever to cater for demand. Like the London distillers they had everything they needed arriving in the bustling Port of Leith – sugar, spices, fruit and grain. We hope in a small way to revive Edinburgh’s fantastic distilling and liqueur manufacturing legacy and build upon it...”

Edinburgh Gin will be introduced initially in Glasgow and Edinburgh in summer 2010 and the recommended retail price is £23.99.
