UK minimum pricing policy under threat

Plans to introduce alcohol minimum pricing in England and Wales could be abandoned after new opposition in the UK government emerged.

Home secretary Terresa May is reportedly among the high-ranking doubters and may u-turn on the policy that would see a baseline 45p per unit of alcohol.

If minimum pricing fails, it could be embarrassing for prime minister David Cameron who has publically supported minimum pricing as a remedy to the UK’s binge drinking culture.

There has been no official confirmation that plans had been dropped but, according to the BBC, inside sources claim the policy is "in its death throes".

The UK’s opposition party, Labour,  has reportedly said a u-turn would represent “weak leadership” and a “humiliating climb-down”.
