It is reported that he suffered from kidney disease and died in hospital in Adelaide after surgery.

Known as the ‘Baron of Barossa’, he started in the wine trade at 17 and then moved to Saltram where he was chief winemaker for 20 years.

After a dispute with Saltram owners, Lehmann set up Masterson Barossa Vineyards  to buy and process the grapes and protect the livelihoods of local grape growers. That company eventually became Peter Lehmann Wines.

Lehmann was revered for his loyalty to the grape growers and wine producers in the famous South Australia region.
