Number of new distilleries in England rises by 33%

The number of new distilleries in England has jumped by 33% in the space of a year, UHY Hacker Young has announced.

The national accountancy group reported that the number of distilleries being opened in England is due to the demand for spirits such as gin rising in popularity in the country, with 2015 sales approaching a record £1 billion.

James Simmonds, Partner at UHY Hacker Young, said: “Gin in particular has become a staple drink for many younger drinkers across the UK and new distillers are taking advantage of this.” He added: “Many innovative new distillers are experimenting in new and adventurous ways of producing it.”

UHY Hacker Young has also said that the number of new distilleries opening throughout the UK remains high, with 56 opening in the last year alone.
