Cognac export figures boom

Cognac exports have increased for the third year running, with overall growth of +10.2% in volume and +15.2% in value.

In total, nearly 190.2m bottles were exported this year taking total revenue to €3bn. The US is leading this growth with 78.7m bottles imported over the course of the 2016/17 campaign, while China imported nearly 22.6m bottles.

Shipments to Europe are now in growth again with an increase of +10.1% in volume and +8.1% in value. Total export figures for Europe came to more than 42.1m bottles this year.

As a result, more shipments are confirmed for next year to potential growth areas – Africa (South Africa) and the Caribbean - in order to achieve exports of around 14.6% volume and 21.6% value.

The VS quality category has continued its success in its main markets. Driven by the dynamic US market, VS shipments - accounting for half of cognac's exports - continue to increase in volume + 9.6% and in value + 15%.

Shipments of VSOP accounted for slightly more than 40% of volume, with a +7.4% increase in volume and + 9% in value.

The older quality categories also recorded significant growth with +24.2% in volume and +23.2% in value, which was directly linked to the net recovery of shipments to the Far East.
