Hindus want 'inappropriate' Italian beer withdrawn

Upset Hindus are urging Lazio-based Pontino Brewery (Birrificio Pontino) to apologise and withdraw its “Sons of Shiva” beer; calling it highly inappropriate.

The label of Pontino’s “Sons of Shiva” American IPA carries an image of Hindu deity Ganesh holding a bottle in one hand.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed said that inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts or symbols for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees.

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha were highly revered in Hinduism and were meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be used in selling beer.

Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about 1.1bn adherents.
