4306 women across five countries responded to Vinexpo survey - Women and Wine - that was conducted largely through wine magazines and high-end lifestyle magazines.

More than 85% of women from France, UK, Germany, Japan and the USA said that drinking wine was compatible with a balanced diet.

Of the women who answered the survey, red wine came out on top, with 73% of Americans enjoying the tipple and five out of ten Germans agreed.

80% of respondents said they drink wine because they like the taste, second place was ‘it goes well with food.’

According to the findings, respondents mostly buy wine from specialist wine shops, with supermarkets second. However, in the UK, 88% of women buy wine from supermarkets.

The overall influence for wine selection was price. 57% of those surveyed said this was the most important factor.
